Munchkin is under siege. Surrounded by monsters. Review of the game “Castle Panic Photo of the board game Munchkin under siege

What will happen if you cross an elephant and a boa constrictor is not known to science. But if you cross Castle Panic, you get the game Munchkin under siege!

In this version of Munchkin you have to protect the valiant castle from the invasion of hordes of monsters! The game mechanics remained the same, but a playing field was added, which adds some interest to the board game!

Who wants to buy the board game Munchkin under siege?

Munchkin Under Siege offers Munchkin fans the opportunity to defend the castle from an attack by bloodthirsty monsters. And for fans of Castle Panic there is a little more interaction between players than in the original. Thus, only the players benefit from such a merger. The board game will undoubtedly interest everyone who liked the original version and its many additions and editions. Until now, Munchkin is considered one of the most interesting sociable board games, and that says a lot!

Preparation

Inside the box, with classic illustrations by John Kavalik, is a board, a deck of cards, some tokens, and a die.

The game offers three modes: classic, more munchkin and solo. In this review, we will analyze the classic one.

To begin with, you should build a castle in the middle of the playing field, placing towers and walls.

Four monster tokens are drawn from the shuffled pile. For each of them, a die is rolled and the monster is placed on the shooting line of the dropped sector. The corner of the token with the highest number should be directed towards the castle.

Beginning of the game

Depending on the number of players, each player receives several castle and treasure cards from shuffled decks. You can start the game.

Players take turns clockwise, and a turn consists of six phases.

To begin with, the participant can discard one castle card from his hand, and then draw up to five cards if necessary.

Many parameters in this board game depend on number of players, so in order not to repeat ourselves, let’s imagine that our game involves four players.

Then the player must give the treasure cards to a friend who is less successful in the game, leaving no more than three pieces.

Now the participant can play any cards from his hand to defend the castle.

Castle cards are divided into three types:

  • Impact cards inflict wounds on a monster in the corresponding sector;
  • Curses help the player and hinder opponents, having special effects;
  • Special cards influence the game in a special way, offering their own useful properties.

The tower icon on a special card means that it can also be played on a monster already in the castle.

Treasure maps, in turn, are also divided into three types:

  • Weapons power up Strike cards in a variety of ways, but only one weapon can be added to each card;
  • Potions enchant monsters and play on their own;
  • Special treasures resemble special castle cards and have unique properties.

Fight with the monster

The numbers in the corners of the monster token are its health, and when it receives damage, it turns to the castle at the angle with the corresponding number. But stronger monsters have more than one minimum health unit. To kill him, this damage must be dealt with one attack.

After killing a monster, the player takes his trophy token and places as many treasures under it as the number of gold dots indicated on the token.

IN draw phase cards, a participant can even ask for help from one opponent, who can play one card in favor of the active player, asking for something in return.

The player can promise a trophy, treasure, or something else for help. As soon as the terms of the deal are fulfilled, if they took place, the players take the trophies and treasures due to them.

Monster movement

Now each monster moves one space closer to the castle. If the monster has already entered the castle, it takes one turn clockwise instead.

If, while moving, it collides with a wall or tower, the monster receives a wound, and this wall or tower collapses.

If the last tower is destroyed, all players will lose.

New circle

Finally, three new monsters enter the field, one at a time. There may also be curses among the tokens, which must be played immediately and a replacement token drawn.

New monsters enter the forest of the fallen sector with full health.

Determination of the winner

The game ends in victory as soon as the pool runs out of tokens and all monsters are killed. Players tally up the points on their trophies and determine the winner.

Additional Munchkin Rules

The game also contains a mini-add-on More Munchkin!. It is not necessary to hold the castle to win. You just need to score as many victory points as possible. Character cards are introduced into the game. Thus, adding unique skills and properties to each participant, some new treasures and one castle map are also added.

The rules also offer several options for setting up the game, as well as a special single-player mode.

About the game

Real Munchkins are not afraid of anything and will find a way out of any situation. And now, when monsters have surrounded the castle and the Munchkins are under siege, they, with flaming eyes and raking hands, are eager to fight - kill monsters and grab treasures! Munchkin Under Siege is a parody of the popular board game Castle Panic, adapted from the Munchkin tradition!

How to play

Before the game starts, players decide which game mode they will play:

  • “Normal mode”, in which players act together and are obliged to keep at least one tower intact, although we should not forget about trophies;
  • “More Munchkin” in this mode, special cards from the mini-add-on that are included in the set are added to the game, and each player fights for himself, the castle can be destroyed, the main thing is that you have more trophies;
  • “Single mode”, in which the player defends the castle alone, and the main task is to leave at least one tower intact.

After players have chosen a mode, they build a castle on the playing field, deal cards, place monsters, and the game begins. Players take turns defending the castle from oncoming monsters using “strike cards.” “Treasure maps” will also help you in destroying monsters; for example, a weapon strengthens your “strike card”, and a potion imposes a negative effect on the monster. After the monster is killed, you take its card into your hand - this is your trophy. At the end of the turn, the unkilled monster, if no curses with a contradictory effect were placed on it, moves closer to the castle, and a new monster from the pool is placed on the field. When a monster reaches the castle walls, it attacks the castle, the wall collapses and is removed from the field.

Who has won?

A game of the “normal mode” game ends in one of two cases: there is not a single castle tower left on the field, then the players lose; there are no monsters left in the pool or on the field, in which case the players have won and are counting their trophies. The player with the most trophy points is declared the "Great Munchkin"!

With a board game Castle Panic I met a long time ago. This was almost the first board game that I wanted to buy. The reason for this was some positive review, affordable price and cooperative mechanics, because. at that time I was only interested in team games. But time passed, interest somehow faded, and Scott Nicholson’s video review, in which he dubbed Panic in the Castle a simple children’s game, completely dissuaded me from this purchase. But, as they say, all the “firsts” are stored in the memory for a long time, and at the next gaming evening with friends, among a pile of boxes, I saw it! The box ended up at our house (thanks, Max!), and a couple of days later we played CastlePanic for two.

A little about the game
(from 1 to 6 players, game time – 1 hour)

Your castle is surrounded on all sides by a dense forest, from which the red hungry eyes of unprecedented creatures can be seen. These evil trolls, goblins and orcs are in a hurry to get to the walls of your tower and destroy it! Only together will you be able to resist the bloodthirsty monsters, and the player who collects the most trophies will be declared the winner - the main Monster Slayer!

It sounds ominous, but in reality the board game turns out to be much more peaceful. In its standard form, the game is semi-cooperative, but there are other options in the rules: fully cooperative, in which there is no need to collect trophies; a lightweight version for children and a version of the game with an overlord, where one of the players controls the monsters.

The rules of the game are described in great detail, everything is chewed down to the smallest detail. There are no complaints about the components either: the field and monster tokens are dense, the cutting is excellent. The illustrations are ordinary: on the cards and tokens there are cartoon monsters and heroes, and on the field there is a standard terrain. Of all the components, it is worth highlighting the lock. This is a natural building consisting of a tower and walls, which can be reinforced with a wooden palisade as the game progresses.

The game goes as follows. Monsters are drawn from the bag and placed first in the forest, the sector of their appearance is determined by a die roll. With each move they approach the castle closer and closer, and when the bastards come close, they first destroy the walls of the castle, and then the tower.

The goal of the players is to fight off the monsters until the bag is empty and not a single forest creature remains on the field. Players kill monsters using cards. Basically, the cards depict wars - archers, knights and swordsmen, who can cause damage to a monster in the corresponding sector of the field, but there are also special cards with more advanced heroes and actions - for example, some cards allow you to kill any monster on the board or rebuild one external wall.

On his turn, the player can exchange cards with other participants, replace a card with one from the deck, and, of course, most importantly, kill monsters. An attack on a monster occurs like this: let’s say the player plays the blue knight card, this means that the troll located on the blue “knight” ring receives one wound - the monster piece turns over with the corner with the lower life value towards the castle, and if this was its last life, then the monster is removed from the board. There are no restrictions on playing cards per turn, you can use at least everything, at the beginning of the next turn the draw will occur to a full hand.

Impression

In the cooperative version, the game turned out to be very simple, we simply killed everything that was killed. All I had to think about was which sector the monster would move to next and which cards needed to be exchanged for this and which ones should be discarded. But within an hour the game didn’t get boring, and at the end of the game, when there were more and more monsters on the field, there was even some excitement. I believe that in a semi-cooperative version or with an overlord, the competitive aspect will make the game more invigorating.

You can only lose if you are not at all comfortable with the dice and the color of the wars - after all, it is difficult to do anything against the monsters in the red sector when you have blue and green wars on your hands.

I think that this board is perfect for playing with children, especially if the monster tokens are replaced with some figures. If I had then, at the beginning of my desktop journey, still bought Castle Panic, I wouldn't be disappointed, but at the moment this game seems too simple.

The expansion is coming

Good news for game owners. This fall there will be an addition to Panic in the Castle called Castle Panic: The Wizard's Tower(Wizard's Tower). The addition will include:

  • 10 player cards
  • 22 Wizard cards
  • 43 monster tokens
  • 6 Monster Master tokens
  • 12 fire tokens
  • 1 Wizard tower with stand
  • 1 monster bag
  • 6 reminder cards

The Good Wizard will join the warriors in the battle against the evil creatures, and as long as his tower is safe, he will help you in the battle against the evil creatures and teach the heroes powerful spells. The Wizard's Dwelling will replace one of the parts of the base tower in the center of the castle.

Spells will be needed to fight against new, more ferocious, faster and smarter monsters - demons, flying creatures, etc. There will also be 6 new Monster Lords in the game, such as the Dragon and the Necromancer. The heroes will have the opportunity to attack with fire, but this must be done very carefully - you can set fire to the walls and towers of your own castle!

Overall, fans of Castle Panic should enjoy this addition.

Review of the game "Munchkin"

A brief overview of the game "Munchkin under Siege"

  • “Single mode”, in which the player defends the castle alone, and the main task is to leave at least one tower intact

After players have chosen a mode, they build a castle on the playing field, deal cards, place monsters, and the game begins. Players take turns defending the castle from oncoming monsters using "strike cards". “Treasure maps” will also help you in destroying monsters. For example, a weapon enhances your “strike card”, and a potion imposes a negative effect on the monster. After the monster is killed, you take its card into your hand - this is your trophy. At the end of the turn, the unkilled monster, if no curses with a contradictory effect were placed on it, moves closer to the castle, and a new monster from the pool is placed on the field. Brave warriors who do not spare their comrades in battle, as well as treasure hunters greedy for other people's wealth! This time, fate has brought you to a secluded dilapidated fortress, surrounded by impenetrable forests, marshy swamps and geysers with hot lava. Having learned that permanent fighters against evil spirits were hidden behind low walls and unreliable fortifications, monsters of all stripes rushed to the attack in order to put an end to their tormentors once and for all. Today on the Pink Sofa is the fortress-defensive board game “Munchkin Under Siege.”

Clutching a chainsaw in your hands and hiding behind a dilapidated wall, always remember about your comrades covering your back - in difficult times, they can be fed to formidable monsters to save your precious life. Don’t forget also about additional bonuses: treasures and ammunition from the eaten brother in arms. Despite the fact that protecting the fortress is a common cause, behave worthy of the title of a real munchkin!

For all-round defense you will need: a deck of cards, a scattering of tokens, fortifications, a constant cube and a terrain plan. I didn’t dare look under the organizer - judging by the vast voids, hundreds of vile creatures were hiding there...

Six low walls and the same number of unstable towers - these are all the lines of defense of the abandoned castle in which your team has taken refuge.

You will have to fight off 39 monsters of varying strength and harmfulness. The enemy's strength is indicated in the corner of the triangular token, and look for the number of prize treasures there too.

Of course, various curses will fall on your wild head in a horned helmet, which will give you and your comrades an unforgettable experience and enliven the gloomy everyday life of battle.

With the help of 46 castle cards, the munchkins will have to hold a perimeter defense and destroy enemy forces, and 35 treasures will go to the lucky players who kill the monsters.

If this is not your first time in these ruins, then you can become not just a warrior, but a character with your own properties - 7 role cards will help you make your choice. Those who are especially forgetful are allowed to take a reminder with them into battle (in extreme cases, scribble your will on it).

Some castle cards will allow you to patch up the walls and glue the monster to the ground for a short time. The hexagonal symbol of chaos will most likely determine where the monster will appear in the area.

And here is the battlefield itself, on which the main events of the game will unfold. So that in the heat of battle the munchkins do not forget what they actually need to do, brief references on the order of moves are provided in the corners of the square.

Hurry! And in half...

Here it is - a citadel, located in the thick of things. In the central hexagon rises a series of fortress walls surrounding the low, rickety towers of the castle. The cards are arranged in such a way that there are two obstacles in each sector.

While the players take positions in the ruins, the first monsters appear on the field. Shuffle all the tokens, roll the dice and place one triangle with a monster in the corresponding sector of the shooting range. Similar actions are repeated four times. Please note that when a monster is brought into play, it is positioned with its maximum strength value towards the fortress.

The castle and treasure cards are shuffled and placed in separate piles next to the board; trouble tokens, wall reinforcements, glue, etc. are placed nearby.

I completely forgot about the unarmed munchkins, shaking from fierce anger, hiding behind the flimsy walls of the castle (they are not shaking from fear)! Of course, each player receives the number of cards due to him (indicated in the rules). Everything is ready, go into battle behind the backs of your comrades!

After card manipulations, it’s time to join the battle, or rather, send a militia from the castle to the front line in your place. Take a look at the field - there are three attack lines and a forest. Monsters will appear in the forest, and it will be impossible to get them among the trees by any means. You can destroy the enemy only when the monster is within reach of the castle cards. The attack cards indicate the color and name of the line; some individuals can attack in several sectors at the choice of their owner.

You can use treasures to enhance your attack, but keep in mind that after activation, any card is discarded. For example: the player sends an archer equipped with a helmet to destroy the Flying Frogs. Seeing the shooter...

... green flyers lose one hit point and turn clockwise with the next indicator towards the castle. The stag helmet deals an additional blow and knocks the vile toads to the ground.

Victory! The token goes to the successful hunter as a trophy. Don't forget about a nice bonus: next to the initial strength of the monster, the number of treasure cards that the player receives as a prize is indicated. In our example - one card from the common deck.

By the way, if you are not confident in your own abilities, you can ask for help from friends who are cautiously peeking from behind the shelters. They can add one card to the attack for a reward on your part (deception, failure to keep promises and other subterfuges are welcome).

After finishing combat operations, move all monsters one line towards the center. When any pest gets to the wall...

... he receives one wound, and the wall is removed from the field! The fence is collapsing, bringing the demise of your team closer (a terrible afterlife laugh should sound at this point).

The tower is the last line of defense and defense. When she falls, the invader settles in the castle forever.

After the monsters move, the active player takes three tokens from the general pile, rolls the dice and distributes the monsters in the forest.

Among the revealed tokens there may well be curses that affect either everyone or the active player. Once activated, the curse is removed from the game.

Don't forget about the glue that blocks the enemy's movement to the castle, as well as the Super Munchkin, who can cut anyone with his saw...

The madness continues until either the monsters destroy the entire castle and tear its defenders into small pieces; or all attacking creatures will be killed, and the enemy’s replenishment tokens will dry up in the general bank.

If you win, calculate the maximum indicators on the tokens you killed: whoever has the highest result receives the title of “Great Munchkin”. In case of defeat there are no winners - everyone is eaten...

Repelling the slug attack.

Before us is a semi-cooperative game in which the winner is determined among the defenders of the castle, but the players all lose together. The meaning of what is happening on the field is simple: monsters of all stripes with varying attack strengths are rushing from all sides to the “count’s ruins.” The players' task is to repel the attack with the help of cards and collect as many treasures as possible, which will help strengthen the defense of the citadel. You have to play with the set of cards that came into your hand. As an exception, your comrades in arms can help you. But here - as you agree.

When trying to squash the weakest monsters that bring a total of victory points, remember that if the line breaks, everyone will lose. Therefore, despite the desire to win, try to organize competent defense and inflict wounds on monsters with high attack rates. Yes, someone else will receive the creatures you’ve pretty much battered and will count almost your victory points into their asset. But you will all survive. Although... In Munchkin, it's always everyone for themselves, and caring for others in this case is an unnecessary luxury.

The rules, in addition to the basic plan for defending the castle, provide various options using roles and other “delights” that will enliven and intensify the gameplay. “Munchkin Under Siege” is a simple game to cheer up the mood, which you can play with children and absolutely officially play along with them by injuring a couple of “fleshy” monsters. Those who like to “grab treasures and kill monsters” can arrange a themed evening: first, open a hundred doors and upgrade your character to an exorbitant level in the standard “”, and then, full of righteous “love” for your neighbor, go to the castle. The more fun the fight will be...

A semi-cooperative entertaining game for all ages with simple rules and dynamic gameplay.
